Noe Valley South

An easy 3.27 mile walk with only a few hills.

 

 

 

We start this walk at 22nd and Chattanooga  heading south.
Walk east on 24rd St and south on Dolores to 27th St. Turn right.

 

Our first set of notable houses are 225 and 227 27th St.

Built by Joseph Comerford in 1879, these Italianate houses reflect a simple style, a one-story, flat front, central entrance, flanked by windows.225_227_27th
Comerford built so many houses in this part of Noe Valley during the 1870’s and 1880’s that the area was known as Comerfordville.

 

467_DuncanWe turn left at Church 1 block to Duncan and turn right up the hill.

An unusual remodel with metal railed look-outs, taking advantage of the fantastic views from this very steep street.

 

Continue up and turn right at Noe St.

This Italianate sits at the top of Noe St. The deep barn red with grey trim is charming, reflecting the wild west of yesteryear.

Across the street from this house are the 27th St stairs.
Walk up them and admire the panoramic view from downtown to Bernal Heights.

Continue up over the hill on 27th St to Castro and turn right.

 

 

27thcastroThis building, with a second story veranda and a picturesque garden evokes a rustic period out of the nineteenth century.

 

 

Walk to 25th St turn right 1 block to Noe St.

Axford_noestWilliam Axford House – 1190 Noe St
Built in 1877 and remodeled in 1885 into a Stick-Eastlake style.
The intersection of Noe and 25th St. frame the entrance to the magnificent gardens that lead up to this emaculently kept house. An iron fence surrounds the yard, assumed to be made by Axford, an iron founder.Axford_barn2

 

The barn faces 25th St. and includes a hay pully at top.
Continue walking 1 block on Noe to Jersey turning right for 1 block.

Take a right.
Walk all the way to Valencia St and turn right.

These unaltered storefronts evoke early nineteenth-century window-shopping.
Currently one of the buildings is under construction. The other is home to Anthony’s Cookies, a yummy cookies store.

SFFD Steamer #13, 1883

This former firehouse is considered to be the oldest in San Francisco.
Italianate in style, with cast-iron ornaments on the first story and sheet metal ornaments on the second.

Walk back down Valencia St to 22nd and turn left to head back to the start of the walk.
